"I am the sort of man who writes because he has made progress, and who makes progress by writing."
—Augustine, The Confessions

"I am sure that some are born to write as trees are born to bear leaves: for these, writing is a necessary mode of their own development. If the impulse to write survives the hope of success, then one is among these. If not, then the impulse was at best only pardonable vanity, and it will certainly disappear when the hope is withdrawn."
—C. S. Lewis, Letters of C. S. Lewis to Arthur Greeves

I love words.

Words strung together in just the right way help me to see the world in a new light. Some words make me laugh, and others help me mourn. Some words are crunchy and fat and don't get taken out nearly enough. Sometimes a word gets stuck in my head and spends the day with me. And sometimes I write way too many words—and I have to go back and put some of them out of their misery.

I love words. But more than words, I love the Word. I'm a Bible-geek-turned-writer who is blessed to spend his days wading through words for an international Christian ministry in the Atlanta area. I write, edit, rewrite, and then edit some more in order to connect God's story with the stories we live out every day.

I'm the author of Manger King: Meditations on Christmas and the Gospel of Hope (Discovery House, 2015) and Broken Vows: Divorce and the Goodness of God (Cruciform Press, 2013). Don't let the title fool you—it's not actually about divorce; it's really about God's overwhelming goodness in dark places. I've written for In Touch Ministries, Focus on the Family, Leading the Way, Relevant Media, Lifeway Christian Resources, the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, and lots of other ministries and publishers. Samples of my writing can be found here.

I offer writing, copy editing, proofreading, and theological editing services. And I'm happy to work with you to meet your project's budget. If you're interested in learning more, please feel free to send me a note from the "Contact" page or through the email link at the top of this page.

"I've gone to John many times to gain a better understanding of biblical and theological concepts. He's a great writer and teacher."
